Bowl of tulipwood

One of the benefits of the new lathe is that I can experiment with making bigger things, like bowls. So after the last one, I wanted to try it again. It turned out to be a a slightly different model than the one I made before.

Oh and pay special attention to the little dark spot you can see in the wood. I think that’s part of the charm.

Guestblog Luthien.org: Making my own pen

dad is a very skilled woodturner and he loves to make pens. I already own three handmade pens and I absolutely love them! So after a few years of seeing him make pretty stuff, I wanted to try it for myself. So this weekend I made my very own pen and I love it.

It was hard work, but I think I did okay. I didn’t break any tools and I ended up with a pretty pen.

A pen in the making

And this is the result. One maple pen. I love the lines of the fungus that are still left on the pen. (Oh it’s so much fun to write with it!)

Stéphanie blogs on www.luthien.org about anything and everthing, but mostly about creative stuff.

Teachers pen

The schools started again, after a bad summer, the summer holidays are over again. So it is time for teachers and professors to correct the work of their students again. That’s why I’ve made a special teachers pen that they can use while correcting exams. It has two sides, one with blue and one with red ink so you’ll always have both pens close at hand.

Safety while working

I find safety while working very important. That’s why I’m going to show you step by step how I made sure I stay safe and healthy without exposing myself to (potentially poisonous) wood dust.

Step 1

Mostly I start just wearing my t-shirt, with firm boots.

Step 2

First I put on my a href=”http://www.baptist.nl/webwinkel_product.asp?c=1&gid=8&sid=120&pid=2022&detail=true”>woodturning coat and the earphones of my mp3-player.

Step 3

After that I put on a glove to protect my hand that guides the chisel. That’s nessecary, because turning wood produces a lot of heat.

Step 4

Then it’s time to put on my dust mask, so I won’t breath in too much wood dust.

Step 5

To protect my hearing, I put on headphones. Woodturning makes a lot of noise and especially when you working with machinery a lot, you really should think about your hearing.

Step 6

Last but not least, I put on a mask. In the event that a piece of wood will come off, it won’t hit my face, or eye.

Step 7

Don’t forget to put the face protection down and your ready to get to work safely.
