A box full of wood

Sometimes, when you have a piece of wood, it’s difficult to recognize which kind of wood it is. Some woods look suspiciously the same and when you don’t have anything to compare it with, it’s hard to know for sure. That’s why I now have something to make that a bit easier: a box with fifty kinds of wood. (And even the box is beautiful!)

Boy makes a pen

I found this clip on Youtube. It inspired me to make a keyring the same way.

This is the keyring I made after seeing the video.

It’s made of yew (the light wood) and padouk (the dark wood).

Turning with Marcel van Berkel

It’s been a while, but during our holiday on Terschelling (2010) I had the pleasure of a few rainy days. It gave me the opportunity to learn from Marcel van Berkel. We made two bowls together during the three rainy days. He taught me a few new techniques during the turning of the bowls, but also how to finish the project afterwards.

One of the bowls still needs a finishing touch, the other one we’ve polished with Danish oil. After a few very useful lessons I gave Marcel a few pens and in return he gave me a piece of laburnum. I already made a few great pens with the laburnum wood.
