In the workshop
More new work
This website is called houten pennen (wooden pens) for a reason, but sometimes I also like to make something else. Like this laburnum keyring.
I also put some new photos online on the photo page.
Turning with Marcel van Berkel
It’s been a while, but during our holiday on Terschelling (2010) I had the pleasure of a few rainy days. It gave me the opportunity to learn from Marcel van Berkel. We made two bowls together during the three rainy days. He taught me a few new techniques during the turning of the bowls, but also how to finish the project afterwards.
One of the bowls still needs a finishing touch, the other one we’ve polished with Danish oil. After a few very useful lessons I gave Marcel a few pens and in return he gave me a piece of laburnum. I already made a few great pens with the laburnum wood.
First time on the new lathe
With the workshop completely in order, it was time to give the new lathe a test run.
The first pen I made on my new lathe (the NOVA DVR XP made by Teknatool) is a one made of laburnumwood.
The new lathe, while making the first pen.
Of course I made more than one. This one is made of zebranowood with a Fancy Pen Kit Satin Chrome.
New workshop
It took some time, but my new workshop is finished! It is transformed from a draughty garage with a temperature of -10 degree Celsius to a cozy workshop.
All the walls needed to be isolated and the sockets needed to be replaced. We also placed a few extra so nothing can short-circuit.
When everything else was done, it was time to build the new lathe and put it in its place. So from now on you can order pens again.
